I know there are so many sock yarns out there and I've only tried a few, and am super-impressed with how well the Opal sock yarns survive repeated washings and wearings. It's always nice to know someone is actually reading!

Beth - I meant during lockdown to tackle the Hilary Mantel - I have the first two volumes and determined not to buy the third until I read at least the first, but other books have intervened. Also trying to finish Philip Pullman's first two books in the Dust trilogy before the third one comes out, I think this fall. I HAVE been doing tons of knitting - will have a blog post on that soon.

Anne - the main difference between the movie and the book is how Rebecca dies. In the movie, it's an accident, she falls and hits her head, although she was certainly goading Maxim. In the book, Maxim actually does kill her. There's a very interesting class thing going on - even though he gets off due to a verdict of suicide, more than one person believes he was guilty but they will keep quiet. I wonder if that would be the same if say, Ben had been the murderer. There is a remarkable lack of guilt or horror at the murder from either Maxim or his second wife - just a concern that he gets away with it. blithespirithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00302216679202800270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2345409957048753840.post-78073604759539909302020-04-22T16:11:32.488+01:002020-04-22T16:11:32.488+01:00I am so happy to hear from you again and thank you...I am so happy to hear from you again and thank you for this post. I have been noticing that many bloggers don’t do posts any more, in favor of things like Instagram which I don’t do. It’s funny but in the last few days I had been wondering where you were and thinking about how much I missed your knitting news. I also love reading about your rambles. As a Brit transplanted to N. California many decades ago, I miss the English countryside, even though I live in a very beautiful part of the world right now.

I am wondering what was different between the book version and the movie version of Rebecca? I have not read it in ages myself but was always struck by the fact that we never learn her name. She is always addressed as ‘darling’ or ‘Mrs. de Winter.’

Thank you for the book suggestions. I realised a few days ago (due to a post on Kate Davies blog) that I know nothing about the suffragette movement, beyond the basics.

Annenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2345409957048753840.post-29732822473768808182020-04-22T14:52:38.461+01:002020-04-22T14:52:38.461+01:00How lovely to have a post from you! I actually checked your blog address, just in case I'd missed a notification, in the past few days - you cropped up in your Warriston as I searched for likely uses for some ancient Ballybrae, bought when Paton's warehouse in the Toronto area closed, decades ago. (Will know how much Ballybrae remains once I finish a pandemic project, a cardigan that has been waiting years for button bands, collar, and sewing up.) You're right, thousands have no such pleasant occupations just now and it's hard to help, apart from donations - our local community dinners, for instance, are now take-out, no chance to sit down now with those folks. Thank you for the book notes. In particular, a reread of Rebecca may be in my near future. I've just finished Hilary Mantel's latest Cromwell novel, having reread the previous two in preparation. This has sent me back to The Lisle Letters, a copy I gave my mother in 1983 at her request. She died in 1991 and the book is full of her annotations, so it's a good visit with her. I suppose it'll be a while before we see more walks from you (the Bruce Trail here is "closed" right now), but I look forward to anything you might post - gardening?
